m so happy to have such a nice friend! Weve travelled much since the time we met first. Im definitely a lucky person.
Working on M F P (meaning, form, pronunciation)
To clarify the meaning of the target item of grammar I suggest using CCQs and time-lines.
The students are given separate worksheets with questions on them. The teacher asks the students to work in groups and asks to answer the questions and to draw time-lines as well.
After that there comes feedback. We listen to different ideas and try to work out the rule together after theyve tried to do that themselves working in groups.
Worksheets with the task for the students:
Weve been friends for more than 3 years.
1. When did I meet my friend first? (in summer 2012, 3 years ago)
Are we still friends now? (yes)
Are we going to be friends? (probably yes)
Possible time-line
Weve been friends for more than 3 years.
?
3 years ago now
Weve travelled much since the time we met first.
Did we start travelling in the past? (yes) When? (when we met for the first time)
Did we stop travelling at some point in the past? (no)
Do we still keep on travelling? (yes)
?
we met first now
When this is done, its necessary to let the students distinguish between for and since. Again CCQs will help. Elicit the meaning of for and since. We can do this as a whole-class activity. Draw the students attention to the sentences again and ask a question to the first one pointing at the word «for»: Does it show a period of time? (yes), then to the second one pointing at the word «since»: Does it show just a moment in the past? (yes) or «Which one shows a period of time?», «Which one shows just a moment in the past?»
