London Zoo


London has a very fine old Zoo. The home of London Zoo is Regents Park which is not far from the centre of London. They say exotic animals were first taken to Britain in the thirteenth century when King Henry III received a gift of leopards and elephants. The animals lived in the Tower of London in a special place. Later the king of Norway presented Henry III with a polar bear. The bear liked to go fishing in the Thames at the end of a long rope. Five hundred years later (eighteenth century), Queen Charlotte was given the first zebra. She kept it near Buckingham House. Curious people came there to see it. Giraffes have been an attraction at London Zoo since 1839. Soon the giraffes were moved to Regents Park.

London Zoo is the most famous British Zoo now. Today there are more than twelve thousand of exotic animals at London Zoo. A lot of children with their parents and friends visit it every day. It is open in 1847 Many old trees grow in the park, and in spring, summer and autumn there are a lot of beautiful flowers there too. Different kinds of animals live there: elephants, giraffes, sea-lions and polar bears, brown bears and foxes, big and little monkeys and birds. Some of them have very beautiful bright colours. In the Childrens Zoo children can watch, talk to and touch young animals. The fishes are in a great glass box. There are many different kinds of beautiful fishes there. It is very interesting.

A good time to visit the animals is when they take their food. Then you can see how the sea-lions catch their fish.
