Sequoya from Cherokee
Cherokee Indians lived in the southeast of the United States. They were good farmers. They had thousands of farm animals. Also they built roads, schools, and churches. They started to learn writing in 1821 thanks to Sequoya.
Sequoya was a hunter and a trader. He didnt go to school but he could speak English a little. Sequoya was an intelligent and very talented man. And he knew that reading, writing and printing were very important for white people. So, he created a Cherokee alphabet. He spent many hours studying English letters in childrens reading books. This was the first Indian writing system. It was a great achievement and it brought changes in Cherokee education. In 1828 the Cherokee tribes acquired their own printing press and began to publish a weekly newspaper Cherokee Phoenix in both Cherokee and English. Then Sequoya became a teacher.
