The narrator: Once three men came to New York. They went to a very large hotel and took a room there. Their room was on the 45th floor. One evening they went to the theatre and came back to the hotel very late at night.
The receptionist: Im very sorry, but our lifts dont work tonight.
Tom: Oh, its all right. Theres no hurry, and we can walk up to our room. I think I know what we can do. We can tell some jokes and interesting stories on the way. So listen to the story. . . .

A party. Several groups of guests are talking. Mr. Green comes in.
Mr. Green: Good evening, Mr. Brown!
Mr. Brown: Good evening, Mr. Green!
Mr. Green: Best wishes on your birthday! And here are some flowers and a present for you.
Mr. Brown: Oh, thank you very much! Fill at home and take your seats, please! Youll hear a new song.
A beautifully dressed woman comes up to the piano and begins singing:

All guests are applauding except Mr. Green.
Mr. Green (turning to Mr. Smith): What a terrible voice! Mr. Smith, do you know who she is?
