Conjuror: Now look at this cloth. (He shows a piece of brightly colored cloth). As you see there is nothing in it. Now look. Ill take some things out of it.

People (at the tables): Oh, how does he do it?
Clever man (in a loud whisper): He-had-them-up-his-sleeve.
People (nodding and smiling ironically): Thats right!(whispering to one another) Oh, he had them up his sleeve.
Conjuror: My next trick is the famous ring. Here is one ring, here is another. Now they will join. Look!
People(in surprise): Oh, look thats a real trick! How does he do it?
Clever man(in a loud whisper): He-had-them-up-his-sleeve.
People(whispering to one another): Oh, the rings were up his sleeve.
Conjuror: Now Ill show you another trick. Ill take apples from my hat. Who can give me his hat? . . . . . . . Now look here! One, two, three!
People: Eight, nine, ten! Its wonderful!
Clever man(in a loud whisper): He-had-them-up-his-sleeve.
Conjuror: Now Ill show you one more trick. Will anybody give me his hat?(to the Clever man): Can you give me your hat?
