Immigrants to the United States began using native pumpkins rather thаn turnips, and the practice continues to this day.
Black cats have long been considered to be spiritual animals. Superstitions link them to witches, being able to sense good and evil spirits, even being incarnations of people themselves. Witches were believed to cast spells and commune with black cats.
As bats and owls are nocturnal, both of these animals quickly became known as omens of bad luck or evil and associated with All Hallows Eve.
The origins of Halloween are rooted in the ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain (pronounced sow-en), held on the eve of their new year November 1st. They believed that the spirits of the departed could return to earth as the boundary between the lands of the living and the dead were blurred during this time. So it is natural that Halloween imagery would include representations of spirits and death.
Today in the United States, Halloween is very popular with children. They wear masks and special costumes. They want to look like skeletons and ghosts. Then they go from house to house and say "Trick or treat!" People give them candies, cookies or fruit. When people give nothing, the children sometimes play trick of them.
