Toula Portokalos is the 30 year old spinster daughter of Greek immigrant parents who believe that Nice Greek girls are supposed to do three things in life: marry Greek boys, make Greek babies, and feed everyone until the day they die. Her large family has just about given up hope that Toula will ever find a husband. Her dad warns her, You better get married soon. Youre starting to look old.
Toula works as a hostess in her fathers Greek restaurant, Dancing Zorbas. She says that shed rather stab herself in the eye with a red hot poker than work in the restaurant for the rest of her life. She is restless and ready for a change, but unfortunately her family is not. Finally, she enrolls in college against her fathers wishes who feels that she is already smart enough for a girl. Toula gains newfound self-confidence in college and soon she has a new job at her aunts travel agency. There she meets Ian Miller, a tall, handsome high school teacher and falls madly in love with him. Theres one problem, however, he is NOT Greek. Toula is not sure which will be more upsetting to her old-fashioned father, that Ian is a Xeno (foreigner) or that hes a vegetarian. She warns Ian that no one in her family has ever gone out with a non-Greek. When her parents eventually meet Ian, they treat him like a lesser life form.
