The British decided to send necessary things by sea round the north of Norway to the Russian port of Murmansk. First convoys came to Murmansk in January, 1942. Caravans were formed in the north of Great Britain. In 10-15 days they approached the Kola gulf. These ships filled with the things Russian needed so much were guarded by Soviet and British battleships, submarines and planes. It was very dangerous operation because Norwegian ports were already conquered by the fascists.
There was a tragic story connected with the convoy PQ 17 under Admiral Hamilton. It consisted of 35 ships and some battleships. First all went well. But suddenly the British ships have been attacked by German submarines and planes. There was a cruel and desperate fight. But finally the British discovered how to destroy the German bombers, so thatmore and more ships got safely through to Murmansk. However, of the initial 35 ships, only 11 reached their destination. Nevertheless, even after that tragedy the British continued sending the convoys to Murmansk
