Riley broke in, opened the safe, took Pound200,000 worth of jewellery and then left. Bob Gilmour, 49, who lives opposite the shop, saw a light and called the police.
The police arrived on the scene within minutes and found Riley nearby. Riley, still in possession of the stolen jewellery, admitted the crime.
A police spokesman said: "There has been a disturbing number of break-ins in the area recently. " He also promised that soon more policemen would be on patrol in local streets.
