III. Today we shall read the text about national sport in Britain. After reading be ready to translate sentences and then answer the questions.
Many kinds of sport originated from England. Cricket , football, rugby, tennis, table tennis, badminton, squash, canoeing and snooker were invented in Britain.
The English have proverb associated with sport: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". They do not think that play is more important than work; they think that Jack will do his work better if he plays as well.
When the English say "thats not cricket" it means "thats not fair", "to play the game" means to be fair".
Britains national sport is football or soccer. It was played as far back as medieval times. Nowadays it has become the most popular game all over the world. There is no national football team in Great Britain. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their separate football clubs, which compete in Europe and World Cup matches (борются за европейские и мировые кубки) .
Sporting life has close connection with the social class. Golf and rugby are games for the middle classes. Cricket is played and watched by all classes. Association football, boxing, wrestling, snooker, darts, dog-racing are working-class sports.
Fishing determines the class of a fisherman. If a salmon or trout is caught, it is upper class. If a fish is found in canals, ponds or the sea, it is working class.
Walking and swimming are the most popular sporting activities undertaken by men and women.
