undred years or more.
The Tower was essentially a fortress whose functions eventually extended to that of royal palace, prison, armoury, zoo, Royal Mint and observatory. Since 1303 it has also been used 33 storing the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. Today, however, The Tower is cared for by an independent charity and receives no funding from the government or the crown.
The Tower is probably best known for the famous prisoners who were 34 , and sometimes executed, there. In 1483 the 13-year-old King Edward 5th and his 10-year-old brother Richard were murdered there; apparently on the orders of their uncle Duke of Gloucester.
35 the most famous victim of The Tower was Anne Boleyn, the unfortunate second wife of Henry 8th. But Guy Fawkes, Thomas Moore, Sir Walter Raleigh and even the future Queen Elizabeth 1st were all imprisoned behind those fearsome walls.
Most people know the 36 legend that if the ravens ever leave The Tower - then the British Monarchy will be doomed. Possibly less people know however that the Tower was also one of the 37 zoos. Lions, tigers and large 38 of rare and exotic species lived in the Tower gardens over 800 years ago.
