Ecological problems of Baikal and Baikal region.
Baikal Region is a very special seaside landscape unlike any other in the world. It is constituted
by unique landscape elements: mountains, tundra, steppes and deserts including the most ancient and the largest body of fresh water- lake Baikal. The lake has 1. 155species of animals and 1. 085 species of plants- more than 1. 000of these are not found anywhere else in the world. Unique fish of the lake is golomyanka ,of the family Comephride, which gives birth to living young ones.
A rarely seen creature is the omul, a fish endemic to the lake.
One of the most interesting animals in the lake is the Baikal seal or nerpa, the worlds only fresh water seal/ There are more than 320 bird species in the lake Baikal area.
Thus the importance of the area requires uniform protection. In the world there is only one lake Baikal, me have to save the lake because it is getting more and more polluted. Industries along the shore of Baikal including the manufacture of cellulose and paper, mining, shipbuilding and fishery, the timber. They are killing the lake. Thus fish scarcity indicates that Baikal is ecologically out of balance as a result of the destructive effects of industrial development and logging.
Growth rates of Baikal seal have slowed down, some organisms are disappearing.
More than 50 percent of the worlds purest water has been ruined. Vast forests are cut down and burnt by the fires. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, plants disappear for ever. The trees are being slowly killed by dust and gas emissions from the factories.
