Durham
South of Hadrians Wall is the city of Durham with its cathedral high above the River Wear. The cathedral and the castle were built by the Normans, who came to Britain from France six hundred years after the Romans left. The cathedral was begun in 1093.
Man: Theres one of the finest Norman doorways youll see anywhere in the world.
On the door is the famous sanctuary knocker. In Norman times, the Church could protect people from the king. Even a criminal was safe if he could reach the knocker.
Nine hundred years later, the people of Durham take good care of their cathedral. It may be almost a museum now, but its still a living religious centre too.
This is Durhams old market place. Vaux is a local brewer of ale, or beer, Britains most popular alcoholic drink. They still deliver beer in the traditional way, using a horse-drawn cart called a dray.
Woman: Are they used any more? Man: Oh yeah. They deliver beer round the town five days a week, Monday to Friday.
Part 4. The Lake District
The Lake District is a beautiful part of Britain and many writers and poets have lived here. The most famous was the poet, William Wordsworth. Wordsworth loved nature and often wrote poetry in the mountains or on Grasmere, the lake near his home.
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high oer vales and hills
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Wordsworth and the other Lake Poets made the lakes famous. Since the nineteenth century, passenger boats have carried visitors up and down Lake Windermer
