In 1606 the first ship captained by Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon visited the west coast of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. They made one landing, but when they were attacked by Aborigines they left.
In 1770 British sailor Captain James Cook found the fertile east coast of Australia. On 22nd August 1770 James Cook claimed this land for the British Crown and called it the New South Wales. The British decided to use the land as a prison colony. Britain needed a place to send its convicts because its prisons were full and it had lost its American colonies.
Other Europeans visited the north and the west coast, which they called New Holland. This was dry and uninhabited land and they didnt find any economic reasons to stay there.
